Fort Wars(Board Game) – January – February 2019

Roles: Game Designer/Producer/QA Tester
Misc: A strategy board game where you use gain and use resources to try and defeat the opponent’s king. Worked together with a 4 person team to think of a game mechanic to create a game around.  I worked with the main mechanic and developed the functionality, systems, and gameplay balancing.


Design process

We went through a few different processes to make our game.  We started out with the base idea of attacking a King. Initially we wanted to have strictly 1 King and one person would build walls while the other one attacks.  Then we began to find out what it would require to do that including physical pieces for the walls. We then learned that our scope was too high and were unable to flush out enough details for that kind of game.  

We then went down a similar but different avenue.  At the time we didn’t know that games were similar to this already/had not crossed our minds at the time.  The games in question are SimWar and NexusWars(mod for Starcraft2). We wanted our game to have 2 Kings and for each person to attack and defend.  We began to refine it more and more by adding an economy and added a weather function. We began giving the units health and damage and were using numbers in the 10’s and 100’s.  We realized we didn’t need that and reduced them down to single digits. Then we just play tested as often as we could to get it functioning and fun.
